This email, upon reading it, is NOT reflective of the opinions of Cat’s Aid, nor was it issued BY Cat’s Aid – it originated from a mildly disgruntled member of the public, who unfortunately made the above implication.

The email does not appear to have been sent maliciously, more carelessly, and any name dropping or quotes are either inaccurate or wholly untrue.

Cat’s Aid salutes San Fransisco, as we have publicly done so on many occasions, for their work to help stray and abandoned animals here in Tenerife.

There is a lot of bitterness and resentment among individuals and groups, either wholly or partially involved in animal welfare in Tenerife, and this email does nothing but add to that ill will.

Cat’s Aid would like to sincerely apologise for any hurt or injury caused, and again, this email was NOT sent for or on behalf of Cat’s Aid.

Miaow.

Cat’s Aid collected “El Gato Gris” on Monday, January 3rd, and delivered him to the team at Hospivet Sur.

El Gato Gris had come from a home where negligence was suspected, but not proven, and the owners didn’t seem to want him back. He had a very bad bite wound from a bigger animal on the night of Friday 31st, and had been having trouble walking for weeks.

A new home was found for him, and the new owner had only to sit back and wait for her new cat. He was only a few years old, and was a beautiful grey Persian male. He hadn’t been neutered, vaccinated, given parasite treatment, or chipped, as far as we are aware, and had apparently never been taken to a vet.

His new owner already has two cats, one with FeLV, the other vaccinated against it! The plan was to have El Gato Gris tested, vaccinated, neutered and chipped once he recovered, so that there would be no risk in his new home.

The team at Hospivet took him on as if he were their own, particularly Irene, who spent as much time as she could with him. He was initially very frightened, and did not have much of an appetite. Once his wound had been cleaned, and he was on antibiotics (and had a cone on his head, which he didn’t like!), he opened up to the team, and his appetite grew. He ate and drank like any other cat, and came to the front of his pen as soon as somebody entered the room.

His wound was a lot slower to heal then expected, but with no background information or history on the cat, it was impossible to determine why. He continued making good progress, and his wound slowly healed. Then, on Wednesday 12th, disaster struck. He simply stopped eating and drinking, and started vomiting blood.

Irene and Cesar were on hand, and were shocked, and baffled. They tried everything they could, from different foods to different medicines, and even an IV infusion. Nothing seemed to work and he deteriorated rapidly. He passed away last night, Friday 14th January 2011, leaving Cat’s Aid and Hospivet devastated. Cesar was still numb this morning, and was unable to offer any medical hypothesis. It’s quite possibly that he was simply the runt of a litter, and was saved from natural selection by the hand of man.

Unfortunately at times, nature can often reclaim what she has missed, and we suspect that El Gato Gris was never intended to survive.

Cat’s Aid wishes to offer heartfelt thanks to Irene, Cesar, George and Pedro of Hospivet for all of their help and the huge effort that was made for Elo Gato Gris in his short stay at the clinic.

A sad story, but at least El Gato Gris learned what love is, and suffers no more.

Feliz Ano a todo!!!

Happy New Year to one and all from Cat’s Aid!!!

Starting 2011 as we aim to continue, we have two cats booked in for castration on Monday 3rd, another two on Tuesday 4th, and one more on Wednesday 5th!!!

Little Juana is still looking for a home, so if you know of somebody who would be prepared to give her a home, even a trial home, please get in touch.

She has been putting on weight, and her fur is getting softer and shinier by the day! She had one trial home for a day, but unfortunately was rejected by the existing cat of the house, so had to leave.

Juana is FIV positive, meaning that extra care needs to be taken if she becomes unwell, and she would be best suited to an apartment where she is mainly indoors, with few fellow felines. She is vaccinated (including FeLV), micro-chipped, and in great shape! She is one of the sweetest natured cats that you will meet, and just wants to be loved!

Please help give her a chance in 2011 by sharing her story!

This is Juana. She is a beautiful ginger and white female. She appeared in Puerto Colon around the 20th of November 2010. She is a pet, not a wild cat, so one can only assume that she was either abandoned, or somehow got lost.

She looked very thin, but wasn’t that hungry, so Cat’s Aid trapped her, and carted her off to Hospivet Sur for a check-up. Her ear had been clipped, indicating castration at some stage, and the vets confirmed this.

After a blood test, they also confirmed the worst – she has FIV, the feline equivalent of AIDS. After a pleading email campaign, a trial home has been found for her, with a lovely lady in Chayofa.

Juana is there for a trial, to see if she gets on with Maggie, the other resident cat, and also an FIV sufferer. To see Maggie, you could never guess, so if Juana gets on well, she is in the best hands that she could hope for!

Cats Aid maintains a small colony of around twelve cats in Puerto Colon. All were neutered back in February.

One of them, Dumbo (the name fits, trust me), has been limping for a little over a week now. I went down and trapped her earlier, and will be dropping her to Hospivet Sur at lunch time tomorrow.

While there, they will do a blood test and vaccine, if her results come back negative.
